Way to Apply Eyeshadow in Easy Steps
Applying eye shadows is quite simple; knowing how to apply eye shadows correctly is a completely different matter. We’re all looking for colors and outlines that make our eyes pop — but there’s a fine line between gorgeous fat and scary fat. Ree Drummond’s favorite eye shadow is dark and shimmery! “A little goes a long way,” she says. “For the same reason, it’s not so difficult that you need to have a light touch.”Finding that balance can be difficult at times, which is why we spoke to Kristyn Rudnet, editor-in-chief and wedding makeup artist from Philadelphia, to find out how to quickly and inexpensively achieve a luxurious look that lasts all day.
It is important to remember that there are many different ways to apply eye shadows. These are just guidelines, so feel free to have fun! “The great thing about makeup is that you can play with it. It really depends on what you want to accomplish,” Kristyn says. Whether you want to create a dramatic look for date night or a casual look for school pick-up, these basic tips will help you feel safe and look polished.
Below we will guide you step by step through a simple eye shadow guide that starts with the right accessories. One of the easiest things to do to be successful is to get your hands on some great makeup brushes. “I always tell my clients to keep a fluffy shadow brush that they use just to blend everything at the end of the application,” says Kristyn. Then come the primers, palettes, and the final presentation. Ready to step out of the shadows? It’s time for a makeover!
Step 1: Start with The Primer.
If your eyeshadow has already disappeared by noon or wandered into the folds of your eyes, the oils on your eyelid could be to blame. You can prevent the eye shadow from stopping – but you can undo this with an eyelid primer. A primer, whether it is a liquid or a powder, absorbs this oil and gives your lid a beautiful base on which you can build your Look.
Step 2: Invest in the best eyeshadow brushes.
As mentioned above, The application of eyeshadow begins with the right brushes in the hand. Always buy the best brushes that you can afford. For a diffused or soft look, use a fluffy brush. If you want your eyeshadow to be super opaque, use a brush with firmer bristles.
Step 3: Choose Your Palette.
A traditional four-color palette is all you need for a simple Look, but if you like to play around, there are a lot of palettes that contain tons of colors. Be sure to include the four basic tones you need: a highlighter, a darker color, and two different colors that you want to mix or put together on your lid. If you have lighter skin, remember that some shadows on your eyes can look very harsh. People with darker skin tones may need to use colors with more Pigment to make their makeup pop.
Step 4: Work from light to dark.
To make your eyes look bigger, brush a light dust from the highlighter directly on the forehead bone. Next, coat your eyelid with the two medium colors from your Palette and use the lighter shade near your lash line. Finally, apply the darkest shade in the crease of the eye (basically just above your eyeball). “The lighter color makes your eyelid look bigger, and the darker color creates depth in the crease,” says Kristyn. You can then apply one of the medium shades over the darker color in the crease and a little on top to blend it all together if you want a softer look.
Step 5: Remove loose makeup.
It is advisable to do your eye makeup first, so that if part of the shadow inevitably dusts off, you can wipe the area with a makeup cloth. Completely finish your eye makeup (including eyeliner and mascara), and then clean the surrounding area. From here you can start your face makeup.
